“Wrong Way” 80th Anniversary WALKING Challenge

“Wrong Way” 80th Anniversary WALKING Challenge

Walking SF’s 49 Mile Scenic Drive—in one year!

Did you know: As part of the original 1939-1940 Golden Gate International Exposition, aviator “Wrong Way” Corrigan opened San Francisco’s new 49 Mile Scenic Drive—by driving it backwards!

We can top that.

For the Golden Gate International Exposition’s 80th Anniversary, we are challenging YOU to become part of SF history by WALKING the entire 49 Mile Scenic Drive! (Other GGIE events: 123)

What!? 49 miles? That’s crazy!

Not in one day—sheesh—in 17 short, walkable, neighborhood chunks, over the course of a year. YES, San Francisco’s gorgeous loop trail around the best of SF has been reinvented as a green, health walking adventure!

It’s surprising doable. Dozens of people of all ages have already walked the entire route—and so can you!

How? Two great options:

  1. Download a free Google map of the walking route if you want to forge your own path, or better yet…
  2. Pick up a copy of the official guidebook, “Walking San Francisco’s 49 Mile Scenic Drive,” which breaks down the 49-mile historic route into 17 hikes of approximately 3 miles each AND includes starting and stopping points per neighborhood, all the points-of-interest, fun facts, history tidbits you’ll encounter along the way, PLUS, it gives you parking hints, bathroom locations(!) AND explains how to use MUNI and which buses will get you there and back.

Why walk the drive?

For history, for health, for SF bragging rites. Yes, become part of San Francisco History by joining in on an 80th Anniversary Golden Gate International Expo event—and by being among the first people in history to WALK the entire 49 Mile Drive. [more info about the walking challenge]

Though there is no “official registration”….
We would LOVE it if you “announce your intention” to take the “Wrong Way 80th Anniversary Walking Challenge” on any social media by tagging us in your post @WalkSF49 or @TIMuseum. And we will be besides ourselves if you also tag us in pics of your walks so we can enjoy the fun —and celebrate with you when you’ve finished!

When the Drive was invented the automobile was all the craze. Today, walking is the craze.

Yay, you!

So go ahead, lace up those tennis shoes, grab your grandkids or your dog or a hot date—and get out exploring the most beautiful city in the world.

Yes, “Wrong-Way” [read more about that story here] drove the Drive backwards—and the official route runs counter-clockwise—but there is no wrong way to get out and see San Francisco. (Other GGIE events: 123)
